Decarbonising cities with geothermal district heating: how to finance it?
19.12.2019Geothermal Energy is crucial for decarbonizing of cities. A seminar organised by the GEORISK and HeatNet NEW projects focused financial risk mitigation systems and financing options for geothermal district heating.
The event took place on 13 December 2019 in Brussels and aimed at best answering the following issues:
- Role of local planning in enabling RES investments, notably for heating and cooling
- Impact of local authorities in enabling the business model of geothermal projects
- Barriers to deploying geothermal district heating and cooling projects
- Policy solutions for facilitating deployment of geothermal district heating and cooling
- Financing geothermal projects
In mature markets like France, crowdfunding becomes an option. But this kind of financing is not available in juvenile or transition countries. The risk in the capital intense exploration phase is too high. The European Investment Bank (EIB) funds a wide range of Energy projects and also geothermal projects. But the financing of the exploration phase is excluded.
