L’installation pilote de Fervo Energy est un nouveau type de centrale g\u00e9othermique. En r\u00e9cup\u00e9rant la chaleur dans le socle rocheux pour produire de l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, l’internet devient un peu plus vert.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

D\u00e9but d\u00e9cembre, un coin d’internet est devenu un peu plus vert, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une premi\u00e8re installation g\u00e9othermique dans le d\u00e9sert du nord du Nevada. Le projet Red, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par une start-up g\u00e9othermique appel\u00e9e Fervo, a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 acheminer des \u00e9lectrons vers un r\u00e9seau local comprenant les centres de donn\u00e9es exploit\u00e9s par Google. Le groupe internet a investi dans ce projet il y a deux ans afin d’alimenter tous ses centres de donn\u00e9es en \u00e9nergie verte 24 heures sur 24.<\/p>\n

Il s’agit d’un grand pas en avant dans la recherche d’une technologie capable de combler \u00e0 moindre co\u00fbt les lacunes de la production d’\u00e9nergie \u00e9olienne et solaire avec de l’\u00e9nergie sans carbone. La petite installation, un projet pilote dans le nord du Nevada, utilise des techniques de forage et de stimulation d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es par l’industrie p\u00e9troli\u00e8re et gazi\u00e8re pour produire de l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 avec la chaleur naturelle de la terre, sans \u00e9missions de CO2.<\/p>\n

La g\u00e9othermie est depuis longtemps consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme un moyen d’utiliser la chaleur naturelle de la terre pour produire de l’\u00e9nergie sans \u00e9missions de carbone. Cependant, elle est traditionnellement limit\u00e9e aux sites o\u00f9 il existe des r\u00e9servoirs souterrains naturels d’eau chaude. Ceux-ci ne se trouvent pas partout.<\/p>\n

Dans le Nevada, un puits a \u00e9t\u00e9 for\u00e9 jusqu’\u00e0 une profondeur d’environ 8000 pieds, puis prolong\u00e9 horizontalement de plus de 3000 pieds. Une stimulation hydraulique a \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9e pour cr\u00e9er de minuscules fissures dans la roche au-dessus du trou de forage lat\u00e9ral. L’eau est ensuite pomp\u00e9e dans le premier puits, absorbe de la chaleur en traversant les fissures et revient \u00e0 la surface via le deuxi\u00e8me puits \u00e0 des temp\u00e9ratures suffisamment \u00e9lev\u00e9es pour produire de la vapeur et faire fonctionner une turbine. Cette technologie a le potentiel de combler un cr\u00e9neau tr\u00e8s n\u00e9cessaire en produisant de l’\u00e9nergie sans carbone \u00e0 des moments o\u00f9 le vent ne souffle pas ou le soleil ne brille pas. En Suisse, un projet pilote de ce type est actuellement en cours de pr\u00e9paration dans le Jura.<\/p>\n
